The tragedy Macbeth was written by William Shakespeare around 1606, after the death of Queen Elizabeth I and the accession of James I, son of the executed Scottish Queen Mary Stuart. The choice of a plot from Scottish history was largely influenced by the political situation at the time. The play is notable for its conciseness and intense action.

At the beginning of the work, three witches appear—servants of Hecate, the goddess of darkness. Their prophecy becomes a key moment in the tragedy, symbolizing fate and the inevitability of destiny. Under the influence of supernatural forces and his own ambitions, Macbeth goes from being a loyal servant of the king to a cruel tyrant. His inner cruelty is intensified by the words of his wife, Lady Macbeth, who pushes him to murder King Duncan. Having committed the crime, Macbeth perceives it as a kind of duty, similar to a military feat.

The next victim is Banquo, the ancestor of the Stuart dynasty. His ghost, which appears at the feast, symbolizes retribution and Macbeth’s final alienation from those around him. This scene echoes the biblical story of Belshazzar’s feast and foreshadows the hero’s imminent punishment.

Power does not bring Macbeth happiness: Lady Macbeth goes mad and commits suicide, while he himself lives in constant fear. Macduff and Malcolm, the rightful heir to the throne, rise up against the tyrant. Confident in his invulnerability, Macbeth is killed by Macduff, who was “not born of woman,” and the crown is returned to the rightful king.

Macbeth makes a strong impression and makes you think about human nature, power, good, and evil. This work leaves no one indifferent and deserves the attention of every reader.

After reading Macbeth, I experienced a kind of catharsis. This great tragedy makes one think about the nature of man, about the motives of his actions, about good and evil.
